The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
