Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among thousands of UK service members on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
